A customer called because their KitchenAid dishwasher had stopped cleaning dishes and the detergent was not dissolving. Diagnosis showed that water circulation inside the machine had failed completely. Replacing the circulation pump motor brought it back to normal.
Dishes coming out dirty is one of those faults that people live with for months. The machine runs, it makes noise, the cycle finishes, so nothing looks broken. But without water being forced through the spray arms, a dishwasher is just a warm cabinet.
That is exactly what was happening here. Detergent sat undissolved in the dispenser at the end of the cycle, which is the clearest possible sign that water never reached it with any force.
What was wrong with this KitchenAid dishwasher?
The circulation pump motor had failed. That pump is what pressurises water and drives it up through the spray arms. When it stops, water may still enter the tub and still drain out, so the cycle appears to run normally, but nothing gets washed.
This is why the fault is so often misread as a detergent problem or hard water. People change detergent brands, add rinse aid, run cleaning cycles, and nothing improves, because the problem was never chemical.
How did we fix it?
We replaced the circulation pump motor. Once the new pump was in, water pressure returned to the spray arms and the machine cleaned normally on the first test cycle.
We also checked the spray arms themselves while the machine was open. Blocked spray arm holes produce similar symptoms and are worth clearing at the same time, since the machine is already apart.
How to narrow down a dishwasher problem yourself
No water circulation. Place a glass upside down on the top rack and run a cycle. If the inside of the glass stays completely dry, water is not being sprayed and the circulation pump is the likely cause.
Not filling with water. If no water enters the tub at all, the water inlet valve is the first suspect rather than the pump.
Not draining. If water stands in the bottom at the end of a cycle and you hear a humming sound, the drain pump is usually the failed part. That is a different pump from the circulation pump.
Anything else. If the symptoms do not match any of the above, the main control board or a sensor may be at fault, and that needs proper diagnostics rather than guesswork.
These checks tell you roughly where the problem sits, which is useful when you call. They are not a substitute for a diagnosis, but they stop you replacing the wrong part.
