Bosch Dishwasher E25 Error: The Drain Pump Fix

Bosch Dishwasher E25 Error: The Drain Pump Fix

A Bosch dishwasher E25 error points to a drainage fault. On a Bosch SHX65T55UC/02 in Newport Beach, the drain line and filter area were clear, so the problem was the drain pump itself. Replacing the drain pump cleared the code and the dishwasher drains normally again.

The customer’s description was simple: the dishwasher stopped working and put up an E25 code. That is the machine telling you it started a drain cycle and did not get the result it expected.

What causes an E25 code on a Bosch dishwasher?

Ranked by how often I find each one, an E25 comes down to three things.

First, a restriction somewhere in the drain path. Food debris in the filter and sump, a clogged or kinked drain hose, a plugged air gap, or a garbage disposal inlet that was never opened up. This is the most common cause and the easiest to rule out.

Second, a failed drain pump. The pump runs, or tries to run, and the control board watches for water to actually leave the tub. If the impeller is jammed, the motor winding is open, or the pump is drawing current without moving water, the control stops the cycle and posts the code.

Third, an electrical fault between the control board and the pump. A damaged harness or a bad connection can look identical to a dead pump from the front of the machine.

What it turned out to be on this Newport Beach job

I checked the drain line first. It was clean, no debris, nothing restricting flow, which took the most likely cause off the table. With the drain path clear, the code had to be coming from the pump side.

The drain pump was the failed part. I replaced it, and the dishwasher drains and completes a cycle again with no code.

That is the whole repair. One part, and the machine went back to normal service. When the drain path is clear and the pump is the fault, replacing the pump is a single-component job on this Bosch platform, which is why I do not push customers on a machine like this toward replacement.

What can you check yourself before calling?

Two things, both safe and both from the inside of the tub.

Pull the cylindrical filter out of the floor of the tub, twist it out, rinse it, and look into the sump underneath for glass, seeds, or labels off jars. Then look at the drain hose where it comes out of the cabinet, under the sink, and make sure it is not kinked or crushed behind something stored under there. If the hose runs to a garbage disposal, run the disposal for a few seconds.

If the tub still holds water and the E25 code comes back after that, stop there. Getting to the drain pump means pulling the machine out, laying it over, and working with both the water in the sump and the pump’s line-voltage wiring, so that part is worth handing to a technician.

FAQ

What is the difference between E24 and E25 on a Bosch dishwasher?

Both are drainage codes, but they describe different failures. E24 generally means the water is draining too slowly or not at all because something is blocking the path, so it steers you toward the filter, hose, and air gap. E25 leans toward the pump itself or its circuit. In practice I check the drain path first on either code, because a restriction can produce either one.

Can I keep running my Bosch dishwasher with an E25 error?

No, and it will not let you get far anyway. The cycle stops when the code posts, usually with water still sitting in the tub. That standing water will start to smell within a day or two, and if you keep restarting the cycle you are asking a pump that has already failed to keep drawing current. Bail the water out with a cup and a towel and leave the machine off until it is repaired.

How long should a dishwasher drain pump last?

There is no fixed number, but a drain pump is a wear part with a motor and an impeller, so it is one of the components I expect to see fail on a dishwasher that gets daily use. Hard debris getting past the filter is a common contributor, since glass chips and fruit pits can score or jam the impeller. Cleaning the filter regularly is the best thing you can do for it.
