Blowing cold air. Either the burner is not lighting or the blower is running when it should not be, which is normally the control board or the fan limit switch.

Noises. A metallic scraping usually means the blower wheel, a squeal often means the blower motor bearings, and a bang on start-up is delayed ignition, which should be looked at promptly rather than lived with.

Air conditioning calls split into a few recognisable groups.

Running but not cooling. The most common cause we find is a condenser packed with dust and debris, which stops the system rejecting heat. Low refrigerant from a leak produces the same symptom, as does a failed capacitor on the outdoor unit.

Water leaking indoors. Nearly always a clogged condensate drain line. The system produces water by design, and when the drain blocks it backs up and overflows, often into a ceiling or wall before anyone notices.

Outdoor unit not starting. Usually the run capacitor or the contactor. These are inexpensive parts that fail regularly in the heat.

Freezing up. Ice on the lines points at restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Turning the system off and letting it thaw before a technician arrives makes the diagnosis faster.

When a repair is worth doing

Igniters, flame sensors, capacitors, contactors, blower motors and drain line clearances are all straightforward repairs on a system that otherwise has years left. A failed compressor or a leaking evaporator coil on an older unit is where the conversation changes, and at that point we will tell you plainly rather than sell you a repair that does not make sense.

One point worth knowing for older systems: R-22 refrigerant is no longer produced or imported in the United States, so topping up a leaking R-22 system gets more expensive every year. That does not mean replacing a working unit today. It means a system that needs gas repeatedly is on a clock.

Why maintenance matters more than people expect

  • A blocked filter is behind a large share of both no-heat and no-cooling calls. Changing it is the cheapest maintenance there is.
  • A condenser coil clogged with dust makes the system work harder, raises bills and shortens compressor life.
