Dryer Needs Three Cycles? Gas Valve and Vent Blockage

A customer’s dryer needed three full cycles to dry a single load, driving up their energy bills. Inspection found a faulty gas valve disrupting heat generation and a ventilation system packed with lint. The lint buildup inside the drum was the more serious finding.

Running a dryer three times for one load is the kind of problem people put up with for months. The machine works, after all. It just costs three times as much to use.

What the customer did not know was that the machine had become a fire risk while they were adapting to it.

What was wrong with this dryer?

A faulty gas valve. The gas valve controls fuel delivery to the burner. When it does not open reliably, heat generation is inconsistent, which is why some cycles produced warmth and others barely any.

A clogged ventilation system. The vent run was filled with lint and debris, obstructing airflow so that hot, moist air could not leave the drum.

Excessive lint inside the drum housing. This was the hidden hazard. Lint had accumulated in places the trap never reaches, sitting directly alongside a heat source.

Why lint buildup is dangerous

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, failure to clean dryers is the leading cause of dryer fires, and those fires run into the thousands each year in the United States.

The mechanism is straightforward. Restricted airflow makes the dryer work harder and run hotter than designed. Excessive heat next to highly flammable lint is a fire waiting for an ignition source. Meanwhile utility bills climb because every load takes two or three times as long.

In this case the blocked vent and lint buildup made the machine both inefficient and a genuine threat to the household.

How did we fix it?

We addressed the gas valve so the burner receives fuel reliably, then cleared the ventilation system and cleaned out the lint that had accumulated inside the machine.

The dryer returned to single-cycle drying, which cut the customer’s usage by roughly two thirds, and the fire hazard was removed at the same time.

If your dryer needs more than one cycle to dry a load, treat it as a warning rather than an inconvenience. The efficiency loss is the symptom you notice, and it is rarely the most important thing wrong.

FAQ

Why does my dryer need multiple cycles to dry one load?

Either it is not making enough heat or the moist air cannot get out. A faulty gas valve causes the first, a blocked vent the second. Both were present here, which is why performance had degraded so badly.

How often do dryer fires actually happen?

The U.S. Fire Administration attributes thousands of household fires a year to dryers, with failure to clean them the leading cause. That is why we open the machine and check internal lint accumulation on every dryer call, not just the ones where the customer mentions it.

Does cleaning the lint trap prevent this?

It helps but it is not enough on its own. The trap catches only part of the lint, and the rest accumulates in the vent run and inside the cabinet where the trap cannot reach. Those areas need clearing periodically by someone who can open the machine.
