On a Samsung refrigerator, model RSG257AARS/XAA00, the ice maker had stopped making ice because the dispenser flap door and its motor had broken apart, leaving the opening stuck open. Ice melted and refroze around the chute until nothing could drop through. Replacing the complete ice route case assembly, part DA97-06473B, put the dispenser back in service.
Why is my Samsung refrigerator ice maker not making ice?
There are four usual reasons, and I work through them in this order: no water reaching the fill valve, a freezer running too warm for the mold to complete a freeze cycle, a failed ice maker module or ejector, or ice jamming somewhere between the bucket and the dispenser opening. That last one is the one people misread. The ice maker is producing on schedule and the ice simply has no clear path out, so from the kitchen it looks identical to a dead ice maker. If the bucket feels heavy and the dispenser gives you nothing, I start at the door, not at the water line. Most of the refrigerator work in a case like this happens inside the freezer door panel.
What does the ice route assembly in the door do?
It is the path the ice takes from the bucket, through the door, and out to your glass, plus the flap that seals that path when you let go of the lever. A small motor drives the flap. When the flap closes, it keeps room air out of the freezer compartment. When the plastic goes brittle and the flap stops seating, humid air gets pulled in, frost forms along the chute, and the frost cycles between melting and refreezing every time the compressor runs. After enough cycles it is not loose frost anymore, it is a solid plug.
What was broken on this one?
On this Samsung side-by-side in Irvine, the plastic of the dispenser flap assembly had crumbled, and the motor that drives the flap came apart with the housing it was mounted in. There was no single piece to swap, since the flap, the motor and the chute housing are sold as one case assembly for this model. I pulled the old assembly out of the freezer door and installed the new one in its place.
What can you check yourself?
Start by pulling the ice bucket out and looking down the chute with a flashlight. If you see a wall of clear ice rather than loose frost, the flap has been leaking air and the chute needs to be opened up and the flap checked. Press the dispenser lever, let it go, and watch whether the flap snaps fully shut; a flap that hangs open even a few millimeters will frost the chute again within days. Also confirm the freezer is set around 0 F, because a warm freezer slows the harvest cycle on its own.
Do not chip at the ice with a knife or a screwdriver. The chute liner and the flap sit right behind that ice and both break easily. The flap motor wiring runs through the door hinge, and once you are into that harness, it is my job.
FAQ
Why does my Samsung fridge make ice but not dispense it?
Usually the ice has fused into one clump. If the household uses ice slowly, cubes sitting in the bucket thaw slightly and refreeze together, and the auger cannot break the mass apart. The fix is to empty the bucket, break the clump up in the sink, and dry the bucket before it goes back. If it clumps again within a week, air is getting into the freezer somewhere.
How long does an ice dispenser flap last?
The motor often outlives the plastic. The flap housing is thin molded plastic that spends its life between freezing air and room air, and after several years of that it turns brittle and cracks around the hinge points and screw bosses. Eight to ten years is a reasonable life on a door dispenser used daily. A flap that rattles or no longer springs shut cleanly is the early warning.
Is a dispenser repair worth it, or should I replace the refrigerator?
If the sealed system, the compressor and the cabinet are sound, a dispenser repair is worth doing, because it is a door-side part and the labor is contained. I look at it differently when the compressor is weak or the liner is cracked, since those repairs cost real money and the dispenser would only be one item on the list.
