A top-load washer was shaking violently and moving across the garage floor on every spin cycle. The suspension rods had worn out and stopped absorbing vibration. We replaced them, and while on site also found the hot and cold water lines had been reversed since installation three years earlier.
A washer that walks across the floor is not just noisy. Every spin cycle puts the drum, bearings and cabinet under load they were never designed to take, and a machine left like that will fail properly within a year or two.
This one was loud enough that the customer described it as dancing around the garage.
What was wrong with this washer?
The suspension rods had worn out. On a top-load washer, four rods hang the tub inside the cabinet and damp the movement when the drum spins an off-centre load. As they wear, they stop absorbing that energy and the whole tub starts swinging.
People usually blame an unbalanced load and try redistributing the laundry. That helps for one cycle. When the rods are gone, the shaking comes back on the next load no matter how carefully it is packed.
Worn rods are a wear item, not a defect. On a machine that runs several loads a week, five to eight years is a normal service life.
How did we fix it?
We replaced the suspension rods as a set. Replacing one or two is false economy, because the remaining old rods have the same wear and will keep the tub out of balance.
After the swap the machine ran silent and stable through a full spin test.
The second thing we found
While on site we checked the plumbing and found the hot and cold supply lines had been swapped at installation three years earlier.
That meant every cycle had been running at the opposite temperature to what the customer selected. Cold washes were running hot, which is hard on elastics and colours, and warm cycles that were supposed to sanitise were running cold. Three years of laundry had been washed at the wrong temperature without anyone noticing.
We corrected the connections. It took a few minutes and it was not what the customer called about, but it was worth more to them than the repair itself.
