Water under this Samsung WF42H5200AW/A2-11 washer was coming from the drain filter at the lower front of the machine. The filter was cracked and water was running out of the split instead of draining. I replaced the filter assembly (DC97-16991A) and the pump case it threads into (DC61-02017E). Hard water is what gets the plastic there.
Why is my Samsung washer leaking water?
The filter sits behind a small access door at the bottom front of the washer, and it threads into a plastic case that is part of the drain pump housing. Cracked plastic cannot be patched, and the seat the filter gasket presses against has to be flat and clean, so both pieces were replaced in the same visit at this house in Orange. On this Samsung design the filter and the case carry separate part numbers and come out as two pieces.
What makes a drain filter housing crack?
Hard water does most of it. Mineral scale builds up on the filter threads and on the gasket seat, and once there is a layer of deposit in there the filter no longer snugs down with light hand pressure. People then crank it harder, or start it slightly cross-threaded without feeling it, and the plastic splits along a thread. A split that small still passes water, but only while the pump is pushing, which is why the floor is wet after some loads and dry after others.
Detergent residue and trapped lint add to the scale. Coins, hairpins, and wire from clothing can also chip the filter body when the pump throws them against it, and a chipped edge becomes a crack later.
What can you check yourself?
Put a dry towel or a sheet of paper under the front of the machine and run a short cycle while you watch. If the paper gets wet during drain and spin, the trouble is at the filter, the pump housing, or the drain hose connection. If it gets wet while the machine is filling, the water is coming from the inlet side at the back.
Open the access door at the bottom front, pull the small drain tube, and empty the filter into a shallow pan before you unscrew it. Look at the threads on the filter and at the lip of the housing. A hairline crack, a chewed thread, or a torn gasket all show up in good light. Reinstall the filter finger-tight only. A Samsung washer leaking water from a filter that was just tightened harder each time is a common way this ends up as a parts job.
Past the back panel and the lower bracing, where the pump wiring runs next to standing water, that part is mine to do.
FAQ
Why is my Samsung washer leaking from the bottom during the spin cycle?
Leaks that only appear during drain or spin come from the pump side of the machine: the pump housing, the clamp where the drain hose attaches, or the hose itself where it rubs the cabinet. Those parts hold no pressure for most of the cycle and only get loaded when the pump runs. A leak that shows up while the drum is filling points to the inlet valve or the fill hoses at the back instead.
Can I keep using a front load washer that leaks a little water?
No. Even a slow leak at the bottom of a front loader runs across the base of the cabinet where the motor and pump wiring sit, and water around 120 volts is not something to run loads on. It also soaks into flooring and subfloor underneath, where you will not see it until the damage is done. Unplug the machine, leave it off, and get the source found before the next wash.
How long should a washer drain filter last?
The filter and its housing normally last the life of the machine, since nothing in them moves. What shortens that is mineral scale in hard water areas, which coats the threads and the gasket seat until the filter needs real force to seal. Over-tightening or cross-threading a scaled filter is what splits the plastic. Clearing it every month or two and seating it finger-tight keeps it serviceable.
