Commercial ice machine repair across Orange County, same day, Monday to Saturday. Cube, flake and nugget machines from Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic, Follett and others, in restaurants, boba and juice shops, bars, hotels, gyms and medical offices: no ice, slow ice, thin or cloudy cubes, a harvest that never finishes, leaks and bad-tasting ice. The service call is $79 and is applied to the repair when you approve it, and you get a firm written price before any work starts.

An ice machine is a refrigerator that also handles water, and Orange County water carries enough minerals to scale the evaporator plate, the water pump and the float valve in a few months of heavy use. Most ice machine calls we take are scale, a water inlet valve, a water pump, a thickness or bin sensor, or a condenser clogged with kitchen grease; when it is the compressor or a refrigerant leak, we repair that too. Two of our ice machine write-ups: a commercial ice maker in Irvine that stopped making ice and a slow machine at a Tustin boba cafe with a scaled coil and a failed sensor.

Ice machines we repair

  • Modular cube ice machines on storage bins or dispensers, air-cooled and water-cooled, including remote-condenser installations
  • Undercounter and self-contained cube machines in bars, offices and medical settings
  • Flake and nugget (chewable) ice machines: Hoshizaki, Scotsman, Follett, Manitowoc and Ice-O-Matic
  • Ice and water dispensers and the machines feeding them
  • Bin thermostats, bin sensors and dispenser augers and agitators

Common ice machine problems and how we fix them

Ice machine not making ice at all

Likely causes: a water supply that is off or a clogged inlet filter, a failed water inlet valve, a failed water pump, a bin sensor or bin thermostat that thinks the bin is full, a safety shutdown from high head pressure, a control board fault, or a failed compressor.

Try this first: check that the water supply valve is open and the filter is not overdue. Clear any ice bridged against the bin sensor or thermostat bulb. Power the machine off for five minutes and back on to clear a safety lockout once, not repeatedly.

How we fix it: we read the error history, test the valve, pump, sensors and board, check pressures, and replace the failed part. See the Irvine ice maker repair.

Low ice production, small or thin cubes

Likely causes: scale on the evaporator plate, a condenser coil clogged with grease and dust, a kitchen that runs over 90°F behind the line, low refrigerant, a weak water pump, or a water distribution tube clogged with scale.

Try this first: look at the condenser; if you cannot see through the fins it needs cleaning. Lift the evaporator cover and look for a white crust on the plate.

How we fix it: we descale the water system, clean the condenser, clear the distribution tube, check the charge and replace the pump if it is weak. See the slow ice machine in Tustin.

Ice will not harvest, or a solid sheet forms

Likely causes: a failed hot-gas valve, a failed harvest assist or thickness sensor, scale that holds the ice on the plate, a water-level float problem that overfills, or a control board that never enters harvest.

Try this first: turn the machine off and let the slab melt off rather than chipping at the evaporator plate, which damages the nickel plating.

How we fix it: we test the harvest valve, sensors and float, descale, and replace the failed part.

Leaking water

Likely causes: a cracked water trough or sump, a split pump hose, a float valve stuck open, a clogged bin drain, or a drain line that was never trapped or vented properly.

Try this first: find whether the water is from the machine head, the bin drain or the supply line. A bin that fills with meltwater has a blocked drain.

How we fix it: we replace the trough, hoses, float or valve and clear the drain.

Slime, mold or ice that tastes or smells bad

Likely causes: biofilm in the water system and bin from a missed cleaning, a water filter long past due, scale that gives mold a surface to grow on, or airborne yeast and flour in bakeries and pizzerias.

Try this first: discard the ice, run the machine’s clean cycle with ice-machine cleaner, and sanitize the bin. Replace the water filter.

How we fix it: we do a full teardown cleaning and sanitizing of the water system, evaporator and bin, replace the filter and set a cleaning schedule that fits your kitchen.

Flake or nugget machine noisy, slow or stopped

Likely causes: worn auger bearings, a failed gear motor, scale in the freezing cylinder, a water-level fault, or a failed bin control.

Try this first: a grinding or squealing noise from the auger means stop the machine; running it further destroys the bearing and the cylinder.

How we fix it: we replace bearings, seals and the gear motor, descale the cylinder and reset the water level.

What ice machine repair costs

The service call is $79. That covers the trip and the on-site diagnosis, and it is applied to the repair when you approve it. After the diagnosis you get a written price for parts and labor, and that price does not change once the work starts. Descaling and cleaning, water valves, pumps, sensors and floats are the affordable end; hot-gas valves, control boards and gear motors are the middle; compressors and evaporator plates are the expensive end. On a machine more than ten years old with a failed evaporator plate, a new machine is often the better buy, and we tell you that before ordering anything.

RepairTypical price, parts and labor
Descale, clean and sanitize$200 to $400
Water inlet valve or float valve$250 to $450
Water pump$300 to $550
Bin thermostat, bin sensor or thickness sensor$250 to $500
Hot gas (harvest) valve$400 to $800
Control board$450 to $950
Condenser fan motor or cleaning$250 to $500
Refrigerant leak repair and recharge$700 to $1,800
Compressor replacement$1,200 to $2,800

Typical Orange County ranges for parts and labor on common models; the service call is $79 and is applied to any of them. Built-in, professional and commercial units, and parts that have to come from the manufacturer, can run higher. You get the exact written price after the diagnosis and before any work starts.

Keeping an ice machine running on Orange County water

Scale is the enemy. A proper inline filter changed every six months, a descaling and sanitizing every three to six months depending on volume, a clean condenser and a kitchen that gives the machine some air will roughly double the life of the evaporator and the pump. Boba and juice shops that run machines around the clock need the short end of those intervals. We do scheduled cleanings for businesses that want them; ask when you book.

How an ice machine service call works

  1. Call. Call (949) 544-5550 or book online, and tell us the brand, the model if you have it, and what the machine is doing.
  2. Diagnose on site. We read the error history, watch a freeze and harvest cycle, check water flow, scale, the condenser and the pressures.
  3. Written price. You approve the parts and labor before work starts. The $79 service call is applied to it.
  4. Repair. Valves, pumps, sensors, floats and cleaning chemicals are on the van; boards and compressors come from local distributors, usually the next business day.
  5. Warranty. Parts and labor on the repair are under warranty. If the same problem comes back within 90 days, the return visit has no service-call fee.

Commercial ice machine repair FAQ

How much does commercial ice machine repair cost in Orange County?

The service call is $79 and is applied to the repair. Cleaning, valves, pumps and sensors are the affordable end; boards and gear motors the middle; compressors and evaporator plates the expensive end. You approve a written price before work starts.

Why did my ice machine stop making ice?

Most often a water problem (supply, filter, valve or pump), a bin sensor that thinks the bin is full, or a safety lockout from a dirty condenser. Check the water and the condenser first, then call.

Why does my ice machine make less ice in summer?

Air-cooled machines lose capacity as the kitchen gets hotter, and a condenser coated in grease loses even more. Cleaning the condenser and giving the machine airflow usually brings production back.

Do you repair Hoshizaki and Manitowoc ice machines?

Yes, along with Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic, Follett and the other commercial brands, cube, flake and nugget.

How often should a commercial ice machine be cleaned?

Every three to six months on Orange County water, with the filter changed every six months. High-volume boba, juice and bar machines need the short end of that range.

Can you replace the compressor on an ice machine?

Yes. We do our own sealed-system work on ice machines, including compressor replacement and leak repair, and we tell you honestly when a new machine is the better buy.
