LG Washer Control Panel Not Working: WT4801CW Fix

LG Washer Control Panel Not Working on an LG WT4801CW

On this LG WT4801CW in Irvine, the washer would not run because the control panel had failed. On this machine the panel is not sold on its own, it comes as one assembly with the main board, part number EBR75131701. The customer declined the repair because the washer had been in the house more than 20 years.

The call came in as an LG washer that simply would not work. I got to the machine in Irvine and went through diagnosis at the unit, and the control panel was dead.

Why was the LG washer control panel not working?

The panel itself had failed, and on the WT4801CW that puts you into the main board. The user interface and the main control are tied together as a single assembly on this washer, so a fault on the panel side is not something you swap out separately.

The main board is what reads your button presses, decides what the washer does next, and switches power to the motor, the valves and the pump. When it stops responding, the machine has no way to start a cycle, which is what the customer was seeing.

What the repair would have been

The repair is one part, main board EBR75131701, which carries the control panel with it. That is the whole job on this failure: order the assembly, install it, run the machine.

I quoted it that way and left the decision with the customer.

Is it worth repairing a washer this old?

The customer said no, and the reason was age. The washer had been with him more than 20 years, and putting a main board into a machine that old is money going into one part while everything else around it has the same 20 years on it. He chose to replace the washer instead.

I do not push either direction on this. When a repair comes down to a single expensive assembly on an old machine, I give the part, the price and the age of the unit, and the customer decides.

What usually fails on these LG top load washers?

On these particular machines, the two parts I see fail most are the control board and the pump. A control board failure looks like what happened here, no response from the panel. A pump problem shows up differently, usually around draining, with the machine still responding to you.

Knowing which of the two you are dealing with matters, because one is a low-cost part and the other is the expensive assembly.

FAQ

Can I replace just the control panel on an LG WT4801CW?

No. There is no separate panel part to order for this washer, the panel and the main control come as one assembly under part number EBR75131701. That means the quote is one part and one labor visit, and it also means a fault on either side of that assembly costs the same to fix. It is worth confirming the model number on the door frame sticker before anyone orders the part.

Why won’t my LG washer turn on at all?

A washer that shows nothing at the panel is either not getting power or has lost the control board. The safe checks are the ones outside the machine: the outlet, the breaker, and the cord itself. Anything past that means opening the cabinet and working around line voltage, so call a professional for it. On this Irvine job the power side was fine and the board was the failure.

How do I know if it’s the control board or the drain pump?

Watch whether the machine still responds to you. A failing drain pump usually leaves water sitting in the drum or stalls the cycle at the drain step, but the panel still lights up and takes button presses. A dead or failing control board takes the panel with it, so you get no response and no cycle at all. Those two parts cover most of what I see on these LG top loaders.
