The LG problem everyone has heard about is the linear compressor. The compressors in refrigerators sold from 2014 through 2017 failed far more often than they should have, a class settlement extended their coverage, and a refrigerator that runs all day without getting cold is still the most common LG call we take. Compressor replacement is sealed-system work and we do it in-house; the Irvine compressor replacement we wrote up is the typical job. A warm LG refrigerator is not always the compressor, though. A frosted evaporator, a dead evaporator fan or a failed main board gives the same symptom at a much lower price, and we test for those first.

LG washers and dryers are solid machines with a short list of parts that wear. The direct-drive washers fail at the rotor position (hall) sensor, the drain pump and, on front-loaders, the dampers that keep the drum from shaking. The gas dryers fail at the igniter and the flame sensor, and the Flow Sense d80 and d90 messages are not faults in the dryer but a warning that the vent is restricted. The QuadWash dishwashers come to us for drain and leak errors and tired wash motors. Common parts such as hall sensors and pumps are usually on the van.

LG appliances we repair

Refrigerators: French-door, InstaView door-in-door, Craft Ice, side-by-side and bottom-freezer. Linear compressor failures, frost from a defrost fault, fan errors, ice makers that stop, water on the floor from the drain line or the inlet valve.
Front-load washers: worn dampers, hall sensors, drain pumps, door boots and locks, inlet valves, and the OE, UE, LE and dE codes they produce.

Common LG problems and how we fix them

LG refrigerator not cooling, compressor running warm

Likely causes: a linear compressor that has lost compression, an inverter board that no longer drives it, a sealed-system restriction, or a cheaper fault that looks the same: a frosted evaporator from a failed defrost heater or sensor, a dead evaporator fan, or a main board.

Try this first: listen at the back. A compressor that hums and feels hot while the inside stays warm points to the sealed system; frost on the freezer back wall points to defrost. Vacuum the condenser coil either way.

How we fix it: we measure the compressor and the inverter output and check the evaporator before anything is ordered. If it is the compressor, we replace it with the filter drier, evacuate and recharge the system on site, as in the Irvine compressor job.

LG refrigerator leaking water

Likely causes: a defrost drain line clogged or frozen so meltwater runs under the crisper drawers, a water inlet valve that seeps at the back, a cracked fill tube to the ice maker, or a water filter that was not seated after the last change.

Try this first: reseat the water filter, then find the water: under the drawers inside means the drain line, on the floor behind the refrigerator means the valve or the supply fitting.

How we fix it: we clear and thaw the drain or replace the valve, usually on the first visit. We have written up both versions: an LG drain line fix and an LG inlet valve replacement.

LG washer shaking, banging or stopping before the cycle ends

Likely causes: on a front-loader, dampers that have worn out so the drum slams the cabinet on spin and the control aborts the cycle with a UE unbalance code; on a top-loader, worn suspension rods; on either, a drum spider or bearing on an older machine, or a genuinely unbalanced load.

Try this first: run a small, mixed load. If a few towels alone still shake the machine or it stops at the spin with UE, the suspension is gone, not the load.

How we fix it: we replace the dampers or rods, usually on the first visit. The LG washer that would not finish its cycle was exactly this: worn dampers.

LG washer not draining or showing OE or LE

Likely causes: OE is a drain fault: a clogged pump filter, a sock in the pump, a kinked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. LE is a motor fault: on the direct-drive motor it is usually the hall sensor on the stator, sometimes a connector, rarely the motor itself.

Try this first: for OE on a front-loader, open the small door at the bottom front, drain the hose into a pan and clean the pump filter; a top-loader has no filter door; check the drain hose for kinks and height. For LE, unplug the washer for about 30 minutes and run an empty rinse and spin.

How we fix it: we test the pump under power and replace it when it has failed; for LE we test the hall sensor and the rotor and replace the sensor.

LG dryer not heating or showing d80 or d90

Likely causes: on a gas dryer, a failed igniter or flame sensor so the burner never lights; on an electric dryer, an open heating element or thermal fuse; on either, a blocked vent, which is what d80 and d90 mean: Flow Sense has measured that most of the airflow is restricted.

Try this first: clean the lint screen, disconnect the vent at the wall and run the dryer for a minute. If it heats with the vent off, the vent needs cleaning, not the dryer.

How we fix it: we test the igniter, the flame sensor, the element and the thermostats and replace the failed one. The Anaheim Hills gas dryer we wrote up needed both an igniter and a flame sensor.

LG dishwasher not draining or showing a leak error

Likely causes: a drain pump blocked with glass or a seed, a kinked hose, a disposal knockout plug left in, or a failed pump. A leak error means the float in the base found water, from a door gasket, a hose clamp or a cracked sump.

Try this first: clean the filter and the sump, check the drain hose and the disposal. For a leak error, cut power, dry the base overnight and run a cycle with the correct detergent.

Every LG visit starts with the $79 service call, which covers the trip and the diagnosis and is credited against the repair when you approve it. The diagnosis ends with one written price for the part and the labor; it does not grow once the panel is off. On LG appliances a hall sensor, a thermal fuse, an igniter, a flame sensor or a cleared drain is the affordable end; dampers, drain pumps, inlet valves, heating elements and control panels are the middle; a linear compressor with the sealed-system work that goes with it, a drum bearing or a main board is the expensive end. Repair or replace an LG appliance?

For an LG refrigerator the question is almost always the compressor. If the unit is under eight years old and otherwise clean, a compressor replacement is worth it: the replacement is a later design, the rest of the refrigerator is sound, and a comparable new French-door model costs considerably more. Past ten years, or with a board failing alongside the compressor, replacement usually wins. Before you book a paid repair, ask LG whether your serial number is still inside the extended compressor warranty.

LG washers and dryers are worth repairing well past ten years because the expensive part, the direct-drive motor, rarely fails; what fails around it is affordable. The exception is a front-loader with a bad drum bearing on an older machine.

LG error codes

LG appliances show short codes, and some are warnings rather than faults: d80 on a dryer is a blocked vent and UE on a washer is an unbalanced load. Written price. You get the price for parts and labor in writing, with the $79 already deducted, and you decide.
Repair. Common parts such as sensors, pumps and igniters are usually on the van and go in the same visit. Anything else, a compressor included, comes from a local distributor, usually the next business day.
Warranty. Parts and labor are under warranty, and if the same fault returns within 90 days the return visit carries no service-call fee.

Is my LG refrigerator compressor still under warranty?

LG extended the compressor warranty on many models after the mid-2010s failures; whether yours qualifies depends on the model and purchase date, and LG can tell you from the serial number. If the coverage has run out, we replace the compressor in-house.

Why is my LG refrigerator not cooling when I can hear it running?

Most often the compressor is running but no longer compressing, which is the linear compressor failure. It can also be a frosted evaporator from a defrost fault or a dead evaporator fan, which cost far less, so we test those before condemning the compressor.

What do d80 and d90 mean on an LG dryer?

They are Flow Sense warnings that 80 or 90 percent of the exhaust airflow is blocked. The dryer is usually fine; the vent to the outside needs cleaning. A code that stays after the vent is cleared needs a look at the blower.

What warranty comes with an LG repair?

Do you repair InstaView and Craft Ice refrigerators?

Yes. The door-in-door panel and the round ice maker sit on the same cooling system, defrost system and inverter compressor as other LG French-door models, and those are the parts that fail. A Craft Ice maker that stops is usually its own fill valve or motor.
