Maytag Dryer Won’t Start? A Door Switch Fix

Why a Maytag Dryer Won’t Start, Even With the Light On

When a Maytag dryer won’t start but the drum light still comes on, the door switch is the first thing I check. On this MGD9700SQ0 in Westminster, the switch had failed, so the control never saw the door as closed and the motor stayed dead. The replacement, WW02L00025 (PN WE4M415), is discontinued, so I rebuilt the assembly from another switch.

The customer’s description was short: the dryer does not run at all. No drum turning, no cycle starting, nothing when the start button was pressed.

What tells you it’s the door switch and not the control?

The split between what works and what doesn’t. On this job the drum light was on and gas was present at the machine, so power and supply were both fine, but the dryer would not begin a cycle. That pattern points at the door switch, because the switch sits in the start circuit and has to close before anything else is allowed to happen.

What does the door switch actually do?

It confirms the door is shut. The switch is a small plunger or lever near the door opening that the door presses when it closes. Until that contact is made, the control board treats the machine as open and will not run the motor. It is a safety device, so it fails closed to “off,” which is why a dryer with a dead switch goes completely silent rather than acting up intermittently.

Switches wear out because they get pressed and released every single load, and the internal contacts eventually stop making a reliable connection. Nothing else on the dryer has to be wrong for it to happen.

How do you fix a Maytag dryer that won’t start when the part is discontinued?

You rebuild the assembly. The correct switch for this MGD9700SQ0 is WW02L00025, also carried under part number WE4M415, and it is no longer available to order new. Rather than tell the customer the dryer was finished over one switch, I built a working switch from another unit and fitted it into the original housing so it engaged the door strike the same way the factory part did. The dryer starts and runs again.

That is the trade-off on older machines with obsolete parts. Everything else on this dryer was intact, so one rebuilt component kept it in service.

Can you check any of this yourself?

You can check the mechanical side. Open the door, look at the plunger or lever the door presses, and see whether it moves freely and springs back. If it is stuck, bent, or the door strike is loose, that alone can stop the dryer from starting. Also confirm the door is latching fully, since a door that looks shut but is sitting proud will not press the switch far enough.

Testing the switch electrically, and anything involving the gas connection on a gas dryer, should be left to a professional.

FAQ

Will a dryer run at all with a bad door switch?

No. The switch has to close before the control will energize the motor, so a failed switch gives you a dryer that does nothing when you press start. People often assume the motor or the board has died because the machine is so completely unresponsive. The giveaway is that the drum light, the display, and everything else that does not depend on the start circuit still behave normally.

Is it worth repairing a Maytag dryer when the part is discontinued?

It depends on what else is wrong with the machine. On this Westminster job the dryer had power, had gas, and had no other faults, so rebuilding one switch was a better use of the customer’s money than scrapping a working dryer. If a discontinued part sits alongside a worn drum, bad bearings, or a failing control board, the math changes and replacement usually wins.

Where is the door switch on a Maytag dryer?

It sits in the front panel at the door opening, positioned so the closed door presses against it. On most designs you reach it by removing the top panel or the front panel, since the switch body and its wiring sit behind the sheet metal rather than in the door itself. The visible part from the outside is just the plunger or the small striker the door contacts.
