On a Frigidaire refrigerator, SY EF means the evaporator fan in the freezer has stopped, SY CE or SY CF means the main control and the display have lost contact, OP in a temperature display means that compartment’s sensor reads open and SH means it reads shorted, H is the high temperature alarm, PF means the power went out, dI SP means ice is jammed in the dispenser chute and OF OF means the cooling is switched off. Unplug it for five minutes, check the doors and the airflow behind it, clear the alarm and give it a day. A SY or sensor code that comes back is usually a failed part or a damaged wire; book a visit.
This guide is written by a working technician at Cactus Appliance in Irvine, serving all of Orange County, same day, seven days a week. It covers the codes and alarms on Frigidaire, Gallery and Professional side-by-side, French door and top freezer models with a digital display, what each usually turns out to be on a visit, and what you can safely check first. Frigidaire has been part of Electrolux since 1986 and shares control platforms with it, so many of the same codes appear on Electrolux refrigerators.
Try this first
- Unplug it for five minutes, or switch the breaker off if the plug is behind the unit. A glitch clears; a real fault returns inside a day.
- Check the doors. A drawer or a bottle can hold a door open a quarter inch, enough for a high temperature alarm and a sheet of frost. Set the freezer to 0 and the fresh food to 37.
- Give it air. Pull the unit out, vacuum the condenser coils under the front grille or at the back, and listen for the condenser fan next to the compressor.
- Listen for the evaporator fan. With the freezer door closed it hums steadily; on most models it stops when the door opens, so press the door switch to hear it.
- Clear the alarm. Press the alarm reset or Set button after a door alarm, a high temperature alarm or a PF.
- Cooling turned off? If the lights and the display work but nothing cools and the displays read OF OF, hold the On/Off (cooling) key for about three seconds on most models; your manual has the exact key.
How Frigidaire refrigerators show errors
Models with a display use two slots that normally show the freezer and the fresh food temperatures. A system fault takes over both: SY in one slot and two letters naming the fault in the other, EF for the evaporator fan circuit and CE or CF for lost communication with the display. A sensor fault stays in the slot of the compartment it belongs to: OP or SH in the freezer display is the freezer sensor, in the fresh food display the fresh food sensor. Alarms use the same slots on two-digit displays: H or HI for a warm compartment (newer models light a High Temp indicator and show the highest temperature reached when you clear it), PF after an outage, a tone and a door-ajar indicator when a door is left open. Models without a display use lights and a beep and cannot name a part.
A code clears with a power cycle and comes back when the control sees the fault again. Alarms clear with the alarm reset or Set button, and most models let you mute the tone. Most models keep no code history, so write the code down and note whether the compressor hums and cold air comes from the vents before you unplug.
System and sensor codes
| Code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| SY EF | Evaporator fan fault: the control cannot see the freezer fan turning. The fan is frozen in ice from a defrost problem, the motor has failed, or a wire through the back wall has broken. | Unplug for five minutes and listen for the fan with the doors closed. If SY EF returns, or the freezer back wall is iced over, book a visit; the fan or the defrost system needs work. |
| SY CE / SY CF | Communication error (CE) or communication failure (CF) between the main control at the back and the user interface, both logged at power-up. A wet or loose connector, a damaged door harness or a failed board. | Unplug for five minutes. If SY CE or SY CF returns, the connectors and the harness are tested before either board is replaced. |
| OP (fresh food display) | Fresh food sensor open: the thermistor in the refrigerator compartment reads open, so the control runs that compartment on a default. | Unplug once. If OP stays, the sensor or its harness needs replacing. |
| OP (freezer display) | Freezer sensor open: the same fault on the freezer thermistor. | Unplug once. If it returns, book a visit; a freezer running on a default can over-freeze or thaw. |
| SH (fresh food display) | Fresh food sensor shorted: a failed sensor, a pinched wire or water in a connector. | Unplug once. If SH returns, the sensor and the harness need a test. |
| SH (freezer display) | Freezer sensor shorted: the same fault on the freezer thermistor. | Unplug once. If SH returns, book a visit. |
Alarms and displays that are not failures
| Code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| H / HI | High temperature alarm: a compartment has been warmer than its limit for a while, from a long door opening, an outage, a warm load or a cooling fault. | Close the doors, press alarm reset and give it a few hours. If it returns with the doors closed and the fans running, the refrigerator is not cooling and needs a visit. |
| PF / Power Fail | Power failure: the control lost power and the food may have warmed. Not a fault. | Press Set or alarm reset to acknowledge it. If PF appears with no outage in the house, the cord, the outlet or a connection on the main board is intermittent. |
| Door ajar alarm | A door has been open for about five minutes; a tone sounds and the door indicator lights or the display flashes. Not a fault unless the doors are closed. | Close the door and check for a drawer or a bottle holding it open. If the alarm sounds with the doors shut, a door switch or sensor has failed. |
| dI SP (dISP) | Ice jam: ice is stuck in the dispenser chute or frozen around the auger in the ice bin. Not a cooling fault. | Remove the ice bin, clear the chute, thaw and dry the bin; if the tone stays on, unplug for 30 seconds. If it returns with a clear chute, the dispenser flap or the auger motor needs a visit. |
| OF OF | Cooling turned off: the On/Off (cooling) key was held, so the lights and the display work but nothing cools. Some installers and sites call this showroom or demo mode. | On most models hold the On/Off (cooling) key for about three seconds; some controls use the freezer temperature keys. Your manual has the exact key, or we turn it back on on a visit. |
| Padlock | Control lock: the display buttons and the dispenser are locked. Not a fault. | Hold the lock key for three seconds to release it. |
| Change filter | Water filter reminder: comes on after about six months or a set volume of water, whichever is first. Not a fault. The air filter reminder on Gallery and Professional models is time-based. | Replace the filter and hold the reset key for three seconds. A slow dispenser with a new filter is usually the inlet valve or a frozen line in the door, not the filter. |
Codes vary by model and production year, and the same code can have more than one cause. The owner’s manual for your model number is the definitive list, and only an on-site test confirms which part has failed.
What the common codes turn out to be on a service call
SY EF: the freezer back wall is iced and the refrigerator is warm
Likely causes: the evaporator fan locked in ice because the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or the control stopped running defrosts; a dead fan motor; a cracked blade; or a wire broken at the back wall.
Try this first: move the food, unplug for a day with the doors open, and run it again. If it cools for a few weeks and then ices up, the defrost system is the fault, not the fan.
How we fix it: we test the fan, the heater and the thermostat, and replace what failed. The same defrost system drains through a tube that clogs, as on an Electrolux refrigerator in Brea.
Condenser fan stopped: no code, a hot compressor and a slowly warming refrigerator
Likely causes: a condenser fan motor that seized or lost a winding, a blade stopped by lint, or coils packed with dust. The compressor then runs hot and cycles on its overload. Most Frigidaire controls raise no code for this fan.
Try this first: unplug, pull the unit out, clean the coils and free the blade.
How we fix it: we replace the fan motor and check that the compressor was not damaged by running hot.
OP and SH: a sensor reads open or shorted
Likely causes: a thermistor that failed outright, a harness damaged where it bends at the hinge or passes through the liner, or water in a connector after a defrost leak. A compartment far too cold or too warm without a code is often the same sensor drifting.
Try this first: one power cycle. If the code moves between the two displays, say so; that points to the board.
How we fix it: we measure the sensor resistance against the temperature, test the harness and replace the sensor or repair the harness.
H alarm with no code: the refrigerator is not cooling
Likely causes: a defrost failure that iced the evaporator, blocked airflow, a failed start relay on the compressor, or a sealed system problem such as a refrigerant leak or a weak compressor.
Try this first: the airflow and door checks above, then listen at the back: a compressor that clicks every few minutes is usually a start relay or compressor fault.
How we fix it: we check temperatures, the defrost system and the compressor before anything is opened, and sealed-system work is done in-house. A refrigerator in Orange with a refrigerant leak at five years and a Kenmore, another brand, whose ice maker stopped for the same reason are both written up.
Dark display, nothing runs
Likely causes: a dead outlet or a tripped GFCI, a cord damaged behind the unit, or a main control board that lost its power supply.
Try this first: plug a lamp into the outlet, check the GFCI and the breaker, and look at the cord.
How we fix it: we check voltage at the board and test the board outputs before replacing it, as on a refrigerator with no light and no cooling that needed a control board.
Stay safe. Unplug the refrigerator before you remove the back cover or the evaporator panel; the compressor terminals and the defrost heater carry line voltage. Never open the sealed system, and never chip ice off the evaporator with a knife or a heat gun: the tubing is thin aluminum, and a puncture turns a fan repair into a sealed-system repair. Time with the doors open is enough.
When a code means a part has failed
The service call is $79 and covers the trip and the diagnosis. We confirm the failed part by testing it, not by reading the code, because a SY EF can be a dead fan motor or a defrost heater. You get a written price for parts and labor before any work starts, and the $79 is applied to it when you approve. Common parts such as fan motors and thermistors are usually on the van; control boards and user interfaces come from local distributors, usually the next business day. Parts and labor are under warranty, and if the same fault returns within 90 days the return visit has no service-call fee.

Frigidaire refrigerator error code FAQ
How do I reset a Frigidaire refrigerator error code?
Unplug the refrigerator for five minutes, then plug it back in; alarms clear with the alarm reset or Set button. A code that returns within a day is a real fault.
What does SY EF mean on a Frigidaire refrigerator?
SY EF means the control cannot see the evaporator fan in the freezer turning. Most often the fan is frozen in ice from a defrost problem or the motor has failed; either way it will warm up, so book a visit.
What do SY CE and SY CF mean on a Frigidaire refrigerator?
Both are a communication fault between the main control board and the display, logged at power-up; Frigidaire treats them the same way. Unplug it for five minutes; if it returns, a connector, the door harness or one of the boards has failed.
What do OP and SH mean on a Frigidaire refrigerator?
OP means a temperature sensor reads open and SH means it reads shorted; the display it appears in tells you whether it is the freezer or the fresh food sensor. The sensor or its wiring is replaced.
Why does my Frigidaire refrigerator show OF OF and not cool?
OF OF means the cooling was turned off at the control, which some sites call showroom or demo mode: the lights stay on, nothing cools. On most models hold the On/Off (cooling) key for about three seconds; your manual has the exact key, and we turn it back on on a visit if you cannot find it. dI SP is an ice jam, not a cooling-off state.
Can I keep using the refrigerator with a code on it?
With a door alarm, PF or a filter light, yes. With SY EF or a sensor code it will not hold temperature for long, so move frozen food if it softens and book a visit. With SY CE or SY CF it may keep cooling, but you cannot trust the display, so book a visit.
Do you repair Frigidaire refrigerators in Orange County?
Yes. Cactus Appliance repairs Frigidaire, Gallery, Professional and Electrolux refrigerators in Irvine, Brea, Orange, Tustin, Anaheim and every other Orange County city, same day, seven days a week.
