On a Samsung refrigerator, OF OF is Cooling Off mode, not a fault, 88 88 is a power interruption error, a blinking temperature is a warm compartment, 22C and 21C are the refrigerator and freezer fans, 23C is the condenser fan, 24C and 25C are defrost faults, 5C is a defrost sensor, 39C and 40C are the ice maker and its fan, and 84C to 86C are the compressor and its inverter. Photograph the code, check for demo mode, power cycle, clear the vents, clean the condenser and empty the ice bucket. A code that comes back usually means a failed part, and a warm refrigerator is a same-day call.
This page is written by a working technician at Cactus Appliance in Irvine, a shop that repairs Samsung refrigerators across Orange County: the RF French door models, the RS side-by-sides, the bottom freezers and the Bespoke line. Below: how to read the codes, what each usually turns out to be on a service call, and what to check first.
Try this first
- Check for Cooling Off mode. If the display shows OF OF, or the lights work but nothing hums, the refrigerator is in demo mode. Hold the button pair the manual names, on most panels the top two on the left, for five to eight seconds until it chimes.
- Power cycle. Photograph any code on the display, then unplug the refrigerator or switch its breaker off for two minutes and restore power. Give it 24 hours before you judge the temperatures.
- Check the doors. A drawer or a door held open by a bottle warms the compartment and sets the temperature blinking. Wipe the gaskets and check the seal.
- Clear the vents. Cold air enters each compartment through vents in its back wall; on Samsung’s Twin Cooling models the fresh food side has its own evaporator behind that panel. Food packed against the vents blocks the airflow.
- Clean the condenser. Unplug it, pull it out, remove the lower back panel and vacuum lint and pet hair off the coils and fan.
- Empty the ice bucket. A jammed bucket or a frozen chute stops the ice maker and brings on the ice codes. Thaw the bucket in the sink and refit it.
How Samsung refrigerators show errors
When a Samsung refrigerator detects a fault it shows the code on the front panel in place of the temperature: 22C, 39C, PC ER. Codes end in E on older models and C on newer ones, so 22E and 22C mean the same fan.
A stored code can be recalled with the self-diagnosis pair for your model, on many RF French door panels Energy Saver and Lighting, held 8 to 12 seconds until the display blanks and beeps. Do not try Energy Saver and Fridge: on many of those models it starts Forced Operation, and each further press steps into Forced Freeze or Forced Defrost. Leave the display alone; it returns to normal on its own. Photograph the code before you clear it: a power cycle clears most codes, but a cleared code is harder to diagnose and a defrost or ice maker fault can take a day or more to return.
Display messages that are not fault codes
| Code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 88 88 | Power or voltage error, grouped by Samsung with 85C and 86C: it usually appears when power was interrupted while the control was booting. | Unplug for a minute, then restore power. If 88 88 comes back, the board needs an on-site test. |
| OF OF / O FF | Cooling Off (demo) mode: lights and panel work, compressor and fans do not. Often switched on by accident while wiping the panel. | Hold the pair the manual lists, on most panels the top two on the left (often Energy Saver and Power Freeze), for five to eight seconds until it chimes and shows temperatures again. |
| Blinking temperature | Temperature alarm: the compartment is warmer than its set point, usually after a door left open, a big load of warm groceries or an outage. | Close the door and wait a few hours. If the number still blinks a day later, the refrigerator is not cooling and needs a technician. |
| Ice Off | Steady: the ice maker is switched off, not a fault. Blinking: the ice bucket is out or not pushed fully home. | Steady: hold the Ice Maker or Ice Type button for about three seconds. Blinking: push the bucket fully in. |
| PC ER | Communication error between the main board and the display board. | Unplug for two minutes. A repeat is a wet or loose connector, a damaged harness or a board, and needs an on-site test. |
Sensor, defrost and ice maker codes
| Code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 5E / 5C | Fresh food defrost sensor error: the sensor on the refrigerator evaporator is open or shorted. | Unplug for two minutes. A repeat is the sensor or its wiring; left alone, the refrigerator side ices up and warms. |
| 8E / 8C, 14E / 14C | Ice maker sensor error: the temperature sensor in the ice maker gives no usable reading; the number depends on the model line. | Unplug for two minutes and empty the ice bucket. A repeat is the sensor, usually replaced with the ice maker assembly. |
| 24E / 24C | Freezer defrost error: the freezer evaporator did not reach the temperature the control expects during a defrost. | Unplug for two minutes. A repeat is the defrost heater, its fuse or thermostat, or the sensor; frost on the back wall confirms it. |
| 25E / 25C | Fresh food defrost error: the same fault on the refrigerator side evaporator. | As above. On many French door models this shows together with water under the crisper drawers. |
| 33E / 33C | Ice pipe heater error: the heater that keeps the water line to the ice maker from freezing is open. | Unplug for two minutes. A repeat is the heater or its wiring; the ice maker stops filling until it is fixed. |
| 39E / 39C | Ice maker function error: the ice maker did not complete its harvest cycle. | Empty the bucket, check for an ice jam under the maker, unplug for two minutes. A repeat is the ice maker motor or the assembly. |
| 40E / 40C | Ice room fan error: the fan that cools the ice compartment is not turning or not reporting speed. | Listen for a fan at the ice maker. A repeat is a fan frozen in ice or a failed motor; both need the ice room opened. |
Fan and compressor codes
| Code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 21E / 21C, 22E / 22C | Evaporator fan error: the freezer fan (21) or the refrigerator fan (22) is stalled or its speed signal is missing. | Unplug for two minutes. A fan frozen in ice points to a defrost fault; a free fan that does not run is the motor. |
| 23E / 23C | Condenser fan error: the fan under the refrigerator, next to the compressor, is stalled or not reporting. | Unplug, pull it out and clear lint and pet hair from the fan and coils. A repeat is the fan motor. |
| 84E / 84C | Compressor locking error: the inverter could not start the compressor. | Unplug for ten minutes and restart. A repeat is the inverter board, an electrical swap, or the compressor itself, which is sealed system work; the windings and the inverter output tell them apart. |
| 85E / 85C, 86E / 86C | Compressor voltage error: the inverter saw low voltage (85) or high voltage (86) on its supply. | Plug straight into the wall, no extension cord, and check other appliances on the circuit. A repeat on good power is the inverter board. |
Refrigerator codes vary by model and production year, and some lines use the same number for a different sensor. The owner manual for your model number, on the label on the inside wall of the fresh food compartment, settles it. A code narrows the search; the on-site test confirms the part before anything is ordered.
What the common codes turn out to be on a service call
24C, 25C and 5C: frost, water under the drawers, a warm refrigerator
Likely causes: an open defrost heater, a defrost sensor or thermostat out of range, a drain hole frozen solid so meltwater overflows into the crisper, or a drain line that freezes at the back wall on French door models.
Try this first: empty the refrigerator, leave the doors open for 24 hours with towels down, and restart. If frost and water return within weeks, the defrost system has most likely failed.
How we fix it: we test the heater, the sensor and the thermostat, clear and insulate the drain, and replace what failed. Two Samsung jobs: a defrost system repair and a drain line fix in Tustin.
39C, 40C and 8C: an ice maker frozen up
Likely causes: Samsung ice makers in some French door models freeze up: warm, moist air gets into the ice room, frost builds on the maker and the fan, the auger stalls and the bucket fuses solid. A failed ice room fan or a stalled harvest does the same.
Try this first: empty the bucket, switch the ice maker off for a day with the freezer running, and restart it. If it freezes up again within weeks, the ice room needs work, not another thaw.
How we fix it: we reseal the ice room, replace the ice maker assembly or the ice room fan, and fix the defrost fault that let the warm air in.
21C, 22C and 23C: a fan that stopped
Likely causes: an evaporator fan frozen in ice after a defrost failure, a fan motor with a dead winding, a blade rubbing frost, or a condenser fan jammed with lint and pet hair so the compressor overheats.
Try this first: close the doors and listen. No fan noise from the freezer back wall, or a loud rattle, means the evaporator fan; no air from the rear grille and a compressor that runs hot and cuts out means the condenser fan. A warm cabinet side alone is normal.
How we fix it: we thaw and test the fan, replace the motor, and when ice caused it we repair the defrost system as well, or the new fan freezes too.
84C, 85C and 86C: compressor and inverter
Likely causes: an inverter board that no longer drives the compressor, a compressor with a locked rotor or an open winding, a dirty condenser making it run hot, or a refrigerant leak, which gives a warm refrigerator with no code at all.
Try this first: unplug for ten minutes, clean the condenser and restart. If the compressor clicks and stops, or the refrigerator stays warm, call the same day.
How we fix it: we measure the windings and the inverter output, and sealed system work is done in-house. The same fault on another brand is in our LG compressor replacement in Irvine; a leak repair is in Refrigerant Leak at 5 Years.
Stay safe. Unplug the refrigerator before you remove a back panel or reach near a fan. Never open the sealed system: the compressor, the evaporator and the lines hold refrigerant under pressure. Do not chip ice off an evaporator or thaw it with a heat gun; a punctured evaporator means a new sealed system. Move perishable food to a cooler if the refrigerator is above 40 degrees.
When a code means a part has failed
The $79 visit covers the trip and the diagnosis and is credited to the repair you approve. A 22C can be a dead fan motor or a fan locked in ice from a defrost fault, so we thaw and measure before we quote. The quote is written, covers parts and labor and stays put. Common parts such as defrost sensors and evaporator fans are usually on the van; ice makers, inverter boards and compressors usually come from local distributors the next business day, and sealed system work is done in-house. Parts and labor are warranted, and a fault that returns within 90 days means a return visit with no service-call fee.

Samsung refrigerator error code FAQ
How do I see and reset the error codes on a Samsung refrigerator?
A fault code shows on the panel in place of the temperature. To recall a stored code, hold the self-diagnosis pair for your model, on many models Energy Saver and Lighting, for 8 to 12 seconds until the display blanks and beeps. Unplugging for two minutes clears it, but a real fault comes back.
What does 22C or 22E mean on a Samsung refrigerator?
22C is a refrigerator fan error: the evaporator fan on the fresh food side is stalled or not reporting. It is often a fan frozen in ice after a defrost failure.
What does OF OF mean on a Samsung refrigerator?
OF OF is Cooling Off (demo) mode. Lights and display work, the compressor does not. Hold the button pair the manual lists, often Energy Saver and Power Freeze, for five to eight seconds until it chimes to exit it.
Why does the display blink or show 88 88 after a power outage?
All icons flashing for a moment when power comes back is the normal start-up self-check. A steady 88 88 is a power or voltage error from an interruption while the control was booting: unplug for a minute, restore power, and if it comes back the board needs an on-site test.
Can I keep using the refrigerator with an error code on it?
With an ice maker code you can, you just have no ice. With a fan, defrost or compressor code and rising temperatures, move perishable food to a cooler and book a same-day visit; food above 40 degrees for hours is not safe.
How much does it cost to fix a Samsung refrigerator error code?
The visit is $79, credited to the repair. A defrost sensor or a fan motor is the affordable end, an ice maker or a defrost heater the middle, an inverter board, a compressor or a sealed system leak the expensive end; you approve the written quote before we start.
