A code on the display is the appliance telling you where to look. These guides are written at Cactus Appliance in Irvine from the service calls we run across Orange County. Each one lists the codes the manufacturer documents for that appliance, what the code means in plain language, what you can safely check before you book a visit, and what the code usually turns out to be once we open the machine. When the code comes back after the checks, the service call is $79 and is applied to the repair.

Before you look up the code

  1. Take a photo of the code before you reset anything. Most appliances do not show a code history on the normal display; where the control stores past codes, they are read in the service mode we use on the visit.
  2. Find the model number. Refrigerators: inside the fresh-food section on a side wall or the ceiling. Washers and dryers: inside the door or lid, or on the back. Dishwashers: on the edge of the door. Ranges: on the frame behind the storage drawer or the oven door. The same code can mean different things on different model lines.
  3. Power cycle once. Switch the breaker off for three to five minutes, or unplug the appliance. A one-time glitch clears; a real fault comes back during the next cycle.
  4. Do the owner-safe checks in the guide: water supply, drain hose, filter, vent, door, detergent. Never open a sealed refrigeration system, a gas valve or the high-voltage section of a microwave.
  5. Call when it returns. We test the part the code points at before anything is replaced, and you approve a written price first.

No code, just a symptom?

Many faults never produce a code. The service pages carry the symptom-based checks for each appliance: refrigerator not cooling, leaking or noisy, washer not draining or dryer not heating, dishwasher not draining or not cleaning, oven not heating or holding temperature, and burners and cooktops. For a specific brand, start at the brands we repair.

What the code is worth once we arrive

A code narrows the search, it does not name the part. A drain code can be a pump, a hose, a check valve or a disposal plug that was never knocked out; a leak code can be a gasket or a wet sensor; a sensor code can be the sensor, the harness or the board that reads it. We test the circuit the code points at before a part is ordered, and the $79 service call covers that diagnosis and is applied to the repair when you approve the written price. Common parts are on the van; others come from local distributors, usually the next business day. The repair carries a warranty on parts and labor, and a return visit for the same fault within 90 days has no service-call fee.

Error code FAQ

Why does the error code come back after I reset the appliance?

Because a reset clears the display, not the fault. If the condition that set the code is still there, the control sees it again within the first minutes of the next cycle. A code that returns is a part or a blockage that needs a diagnosis.

Are error codes the same across brands?

No. Samsung, LG, Bosch, GE and the Whirlpool family each use their own system, and even within one brand the meaning can change between model lines. Each guide names the lines it applies to, and the owner’s manual for your model number is the definitive list.

Where do I find the model number?

Refrigerators: a label inside the fresh-food section. Washers and dryers: inside the door or lid, or on the back panel. Dishwashers: on the edge of the door. Ranges and ovens: on the frame behind the oven door or the storage drawer. Have it ready when you call. It tells us which parts the visit is likely to need and which ones have to be ordered.

Can I keep using the appliance with a code on it?

For water supply, drain and unbalance codes you can usually run another cycle after the checks in the guide. For leak, overfill, heater and door-lock codes, stop and switch the breaker off: water on the floor or a heater stuck on does more damage than a day without the appliance.

How much does it cost to fix an error code?

The service call is $79 and is applied to the repair. The code decides nothing about the price: the part we find does. You get a written price for parts and labor before any work starts, and you can decline it and pay only the $79.
