Whirlpool Oven Not Heating: Bake Igniter Fix

Whirlpool Oven Not Heating? A Bake Igniter Fixed This One

On this call the oven would not heat at all. The unit was a Whirlpool GW399LXUQ07 in Mission Viejo. Diagnosis showed the bake igniter had failed. I installed a replacement igniter, part number 5303935066, and the oven came back up to temperature and held it.

A Whirlpool oven not heating is one of the more common calls I take, and on a gas range the bake igniter is where I start looking. The customer’s description was simple: the oven just does not get hot.

Why was the Whirlpool oven not heating?

The bake igniter had failed. On a gas oven, the igniter does two jobs at once. It glows hot enough to light the gas, and the current it draws is what pulls open the oven’s gas safety valve. The valve is wired in series with the igniter, so if the igniter does not pull enough current, the valve never opens and no gas reaches the burner.

That is why a weak or dead igniter shows up as an oven with no heat rather than an oven with an unlit burner. The control board calls for bake, the igniter may even glow, but the gas never gets released. Nothing else in the cooking cycle looks wrong from the front panel.

In this case the igniter was the only failed component. The oven’s controls, display and timing were all behaving normally when I ran it.

How I replaced the igniter

I replaced the failed bake igniter with part 5303935066. Once the new igniter was in and connected, I ran the oven in bake and confirmed it lit and heated the way it should. The customer has the oven working the same as before the failure.

Igniters are matched by mounting style, terminal type and current rating, not by the badge on the oven door, so a cross-brand part number is normal here as long as it matches the original.

Opening a gas oven to get at the burner tube and igniter means working around the gas supply and the safety valve. That part belongs to a technician with the tools to verify the valve opens and closes correctly.

What can you safely check yourself?

Before you call anyone, check that the oven is not sitting in a lock, delay start, or Sabbath mode, since those will accept a temperature setting without actually heating. Confirm the range has gas by lighting a surface burner. If the cooktop lights but the oven stays cold, the problem is on the oven side.

You can also listen at the oven during a bake cycle. If you hear and smell nothing at all after a few minutes, the gas valve is not opening. Stop there. Testing the igniter circuit involves live voltage and an open gas line, and that is work for a professional.

FAQ

How do I know if my oven igniter is going bad before it fails completely?

A weakening igniter usually gives you warning. Preheat starts taking noticeably longer, the oven struggles to recover temperature after you open the door, and baking results get uneven. That happens because the igniter is still drawing enough current to open the gas valve, but only slowly. Once it drops below the valve’s threshold, the oven stops heating entirely, which is the stage the Whirlpool in Mission Viejo had reached.

Can a Frigidaire part number be used in a Whirlpool oven?

Yes, when the physical and electrical specs match. Oven igniters are built by a handful of manufacturers and sold under many brand numbers, so the same igniter often crosses several appliance makers. What matters is the bracket and mounting position, the terminal connector, and whether it is a flat or round style element. Part 5303935066 was the correct match for this Whirlpool GW399LXUQ07.

Why does my broiler still work when the bake burner does not?

Most gas ovens have a separate igniter for the bake burner and the broil burner. They run on the same safety valve assembly in some designs and separate valves in others, but the igniters themselves are independent parts. One can fail while the other keeps working normally, which is a useful clue. If broil heats and bake does not, the bake igniter is the first suspect.
