Viking Appliance Repair in Irvine and Orange County

Precision Restored: Fixing Temperature Issues in a Viking Oven — Cactus Appliance, Orange County CA

Viking range, oven, cooktop, refrigerator and dishwasher repair in Irvine and across Orange County, same day, Monday to Saturday. We work on the professional-style gas and dual-fuel ranges Viking is known for, the rangetops and wall ovens, and the built-in refrigerators, including their sealed systems. The service call is $79, it covers the trip and the diagnosis, and it is applied to the repair when you approve it. You get a written price for parts and labor before any work starts.

Viking Range has been part of the Middleby Corporation since 2013. The core of the line is the professional-style range: gas and dual-fuel, 30 to 60 inches wide, with a large convection oven and, on the wide models, a griddle or a second oven. Rangetops, wall ovens, built-in refrigerators and dishwashers round out the kitchen. A Viking range is built heavier than a mass-market range and is designed to be serviced, which is why so many are still in daily use after twenty years. The parts that wear are predictable: spark modules and igniter electrodes on the cooktop, oven igniters, thermostats and temperature sensors, convection fan motors, door hinges and gaskets, and on the built-in refrigerators the evaporators, condenser fans and compressors.

One thing to know before you book: Viking parts come through the appliance-parts distributors rather than the hardware store. Universal oven igniters and a few common parts are usually on the van or available locally; spark modules, thermostats, hinges and control boards for the common ranges usually arrive the next business day from the distributor, and control boards for older models and most built-in refrigerator parts can take longer. We give you the realistic lead time with the written price. Our write-up on a Viking oven that would not hold its temperature shows a thermostat repair on one of these ovens.

Viking appliances we repair

  • Viking professional gas and dual-fuel ranges, 30 to 60 inches: burners that click or will not light, an oven that will not heat or runs cold, convection fan noise, doors that do not close, oven lights and control problems.
  • Viking rangetops and cooktops: spark modules, igniter electrodes, burner valves, griddle and simmer problems.
  • Viking wall ovens, single and double, electric and gas: bake and broil elements, igniters, temperature sensors, control boards, door locks, convection fans.
  • Viking built-in refrigerators, freezers and columns: not cooling, evaporator leaks, compressors, condenser fans, ice makers, door gaskets and hinges.
  • Viking dishwashers: not draining, not drying, leaks at the door, control faults.

Common Viking problems and how we fix them

Viking burner clicks constantly or will not light

Likely causes: a spark module that fires every igniter when one knob is turned, so one wet or cracked igniter electrode makes every burner click; a burner cap sitting off-center after cleaning; a grounding wire loose at the burner; or a failed spark module.

Try this first: after a boil-over, let the cooktop dry for a few hours, then re-seat every burner cap so it sits flat. Clicking that continues with everything dry and seated is an electrode or the module.

How we fix it: we isolate the bad electrode by disconnecting them one at a time at the module, replace the cracked one, and replace the module only when it is the cause.

Viking gas oven slow to heat or not heating

Likely causes: an oven igniter that still glows but no longer draws enough current to open the safety valve, a safety valve that has failed, or on the dual-fuel models a bake element or a relay.

Try this first: set bake and time the burner. On a healthy oven you hear it light within about a minute. A long wait before the whoosh, or a flame that lights late and goes out, points to a weak igniter. The igniter sits under the oven floor panel, so you will not see it glow from the cavity.

How we fix it: we measure the igniter current under load and replace the igniter when it is below the valve’s opening threshold; if the current is right and the valve stays shut, the valve is replaced instead.

Viking oven temperature off, or swinging during a bake

Likely causes: on the older ranges a mechanical thermostat whose capillary has drifted, on the newer ones a temperature sensor out of range or a control board, and on either a door gasket that leaks heat so the oven cycles constantly.

Try this first: put an oven thermometer in the center, set 350 and read it after thirty minutes. A steady reading more than 25 degrees off is a calibration or thermostat problem; a reading that swings widely is the control or the gasket.

How we fix it: we compare the sensor reading to a reference thermometer, calibrate when calibration is enough, and replace the thermostat or the sensor when it is not, as on the Viking oven thermostat repair we wrote up.

Viking convection fan noisy or not running

Likely causes: a fan motor with dry bearings, a fan blade that has loosened and rubs the baffle, or no power reaching the fan: on the electronic-control ovens a failed relay on the board, on the older mechanical ranges a worn oven selector switch. Any of these leaves the oven heating unevenly in convection mode.

Try this first: listen with the oven cold and the fan running. A scraping sound is the blade, a growl or a squeal is the bearings, silence with the fan selected is the motor, the selector switch or the relay.

How we fix it: we pull the rear baffle, replace the motor or re-seat the blade, and test the selector switch or the relay output when the fan has no power.

Viking oven door hangs open, slams or does not seal

Likely causes: door hinges that have lost their spring tension, which is the most common door complaint on these ranges; worn hinge receivers in the frame; or a flattened door gasket that lets heat out around the edge and makes the handle hot.

Try this first: open the door halfway and let go. A door that drops instead of holding has a tired hinge. Check the gasket for flat spots at the corners.

How we fix it: we replace the hinges as a pair, replace the receivers when they are worn, and fit a new gasket.

Viking built-in refrigerator not cooling

Likely causes: a condenser packed with dust behind the grille, a condenser fan that stopped, a refrigerant leak at the evaporator, or a failed compressor. On a built-in the temperature usually drifts up over days rather than failing overnight.

Try this first: pull the grille and vacuum the condenser, then listen for the condenser fan.

How we fix it: we check pressures and the fan, find the leak when there is one, and replace the evaporator or the compressor and recharge the system in your kitchen. Sealed-system work on built-ins is done by us, not referred out.

Viking repairs we have written up

What Viking repair costs

The service call is $79. It covers the trip and the diagnosis, and it is applied to the repair when you approve it. You get one written price for the part and the labor before work starts, and it does not change. Viking parts cost more than mass-market parts and the labor is longer because the appliances are heavy and built-in. An oven igniter, an igniter electrode or a door gasket is the affordable end; a spark module, a thermostat, a temperature sensor, a convection fan motor or a pair of hinges is the middle; a control board, an oven safety valve or a sealed-system repair on a built-in refrigerator is the expensive end. When a part is no longer available we tell you on the first visit.

RepairTypical price, parts and labor
Bake or broil element$180 to $320
Gas oven igniter$200 to $350
Temperature sensor$160 to $280
Burner spark igniter or switch$160 to $300
Spark module$200 to $350
Convection fan motor$220 to $400
Oven gas safety valve$250 to $500
Door hinges or gasket$180 to $320
Electronic control board$300 to $700
Induction power board or coil$350 to $800

Typical Orange County ranges for parts and labor on common models; the service call is $79 and is applied to any of them. Built-in, professional and commercial units, and parts that have to come from the manufacturer, can run higher. You get the exact written price after the diagnosis and before any work starts.

Repair or replace a Viking appliance?

A Viking range is usually worth repairing. Replacing a 36 or 48 inch professional range costs many times any repair we are likely to quote, the cabinet opening is cut for it, and the parts that fail are the parts designed to be replaced. We repair twenty-year-old Viking ranges without hesitation as long as the parts still exist, and for most of them they do.

Built-in refrigerators are the one place the question is real. A Viking built-in past fifteen years with a failed compressor or a leaking evaporator is still usually worth the sealed-system repair, because replacing a built-in costs many times the repair, plus the carpentry, but we give you the number and the honest condition of the rest of the unit and let you decide. Dishwashers follow the mass-market rule: a pump or a valve is worth it, a failed control board on an old unit often is not.

Diagnosing a Viking range or oven

The all-gas Viking ranges with a mechanical thermostat have no display and show no error codes, so on those the diagnosis is done with instruments. The dual-fuel ranges and the wall ovens with electronic controls show a short list of F-codes; we read the code first, then confirm it with the meter, because a sensor code and a board code call for different parts. On the cooktop we test the spark module output and each igniter electrode for cracks and leakage to ground. In the oven we measure igniter current with a clamp meter, because a Viking igniter can glow brightly and still not pull enough current to open the safety valve. We compare the oven temperature against a reference thermometer over a full cycle to separate a drifted thermostat from a failing sensor or a control board. Doors get a hinge tension check and a gasket inspection, because a leaking door explains many slow-bake and hot-handle complaints. On the built-in refrigerators we read the thermistors, check the condenser fan and the airflow, and put gauges on the system before anything is quoted. Tell us the model number if you can find it. On many Viking ranges the tag is under the left front burner grate or behind the kick panel; on wall ovens it is usually on the frame behind the door, and on built-in refrigerators inside the fresh-food compartment.

How a Viking service call works

  1. Call or book online. Call (949) 544-5550 or book online. Same-day appointments are available across Orange County, Monday to Saturday.
  2. Diagnose. The technician tests the igniters, the module, the sensor or thermostat, the fan and the door, or the sealed system on a refrigerator, and names the failed part. The $79 covers this and is applied to the repair.
  3. Written price. You get a written price for parts and labor and the lead time for any part that has to be ordered before you approve anything.
  4. Repair. Common parts such as igniters, electrodes and gaskets are usually on the van. Anything else is ordered that day, and we return when it arrives.
  5. Warranty. Parts and labor on the repair are covered, and if the same fault returns within 90 days there is no service-call fee for the return visit.

Viking appliance repair FAQ

How much does Viking appliance repair cost in Orange County?

The service call is $79 and is applied to the repair when you approve it. Igniters, electrodes and gaskets are the affordable end; spark modules, thermostats, sensors, fan motors and hinges the middle; control boards and sealed-system repairs the expensive end. The price is in writing before work starts.

Why does my Viking burner keep clicking after it lights?

The spark module fires every igniter together, so one wet or cracked electrode anywhere on the cooktop keeps them all clicking. Let the cooktop dry and re-seat the burner caps; if it continues, an electrode or the module needs replacing.

Why does my Viking oven take so long to heat or run cold?

Most often the oven igniter has weakened and opens the gas valve late or not at all. On older ranges a drifted thermostat is the other common cause, and a worn door gasket makes any oven slow.

How long do Viking parts take?

Common igniters and gaskets are often on the van or available locally. Spark modules, thermostats, hinges and control boards for the common ranges usually arrive the next business day from the distributor; control boards for older models and most built-in refrigerator parts can take longer. We tell you the lead time with the price.

Do you repair Viking built-in refrigerators?

Yes, including the sealed system. Evaporator leaks, compressors and condenser fans on Viking built-ins are repaired by us in your kitchen, not referred to another company.

Is a twenty-year-old Viking range worth repairing?

Usually, yes. The range was built to be serviced, replacement costs many times any repair, and igniters, modules, thermostats and hinges for most of these ranges are still available.

Can you come out the same day for a Viking range?

Usually, yes, for the diagnosis. Same-day appointments are available across Orange County Monday to Saturday; if the part has to be ordered, the repair itself follows when it arrives.

What warranty do you give on a Viking repair?

Both the part and the labor are covered. If the same fault comes back within 90 days, the return visit carries no service-call fee.
