KitchenAid Appliance Repair in Irvine and Orange County

How to Fix a KitchenAid Dishwasher with Circulation Issues: Professional Repair Services — Cactus Appliance, Orange County CA

KitchenAid appliance repair in Irvine and across Orange County, same day, Monday to Saturday. We repair KitchenAid refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges, wall ovens, cooktops and microwaves, built-in and freestanding. The service call is $79; it covers the trip and the diagnosis and comes off the repair when you approve it. You see the price for parts and labor in writing before we start, and it stays put.

KitchenAid is a Whirlpool Corporation brand, and under the stainless panels most KitchenAid appliances share a platform with Whirlpool and Maytag: the same dishwasher sump and wash pump, the same oven control logic, the same refrigerator defrost circuit. For you that means parts are plentiful and rarely on back order, and the diagnostic codes read the same way across the three brands. It also means a KitchenAid has the weak spots of its Whirlpool twin: a dishwasher wash pump that stops moving water or a diverter motor stuck feeding one spray arm, a wall oven door lock or relay board that will not let the oven heat, a refrigerator evaporator fan or defrost system that leaves the fresh-food section warm and water on the floor.

What sits on top of that platform is what you paid for: built-in and French-door refrigerators with panel-ready doors, dual-fuel ranges with a gas cooktop over an electric oven, cooktops with sealed burners and heavy grates. Those are worth repairing for a long time, because replacing a built-in is a cabinetry job as much as a purchase. Three KitchenAid calls are on the blog: a refrigerator leaking onto the floor in Irvine, a gas cooktop leak in Villa Park and a dishwasher with a failed circulation pump.

KitchenAid appliances we repair

  • Refrigerators: built-in, French-door, side-by-side and counter-depth. Evaporator fans, defrost heaters and thermistors, clogged drains, ice makers, water valves, sealed-system faults.
  • Dishwashers: diverter motors, wash and drain pumps, heaters, door latches, dispensers, control boards and the fault codes the Whirlpool platform reports.
  • Ranges: dual-fuel and gas. Oven igniters, bake and broil elements, temperature sensors, spark modules, control boards.
  • Wall ovens: door locks, relay and control boards, elements, convection fans, temperature sensors.
  • Cooktops: gas sealed burners, spark modules, igniters, valves and leaks at the manifold; electric and induction elements.
  • Microwaves: built-in and over-the-range. Not heating, door switches, control panels.

Common KitchenAid problems and how we fix them

KitchenAid refrigerator leaking water on the floor

Likely causes: a defrost drain blocked with ice or debris, so meltwater overflows the trough and runs out under the door; a cracked or shifted drain pan; a water inlet valve seeping at the back, or the filter housing inside the cabinet dripping down the liner; an ice maker fill tube that split.

Try this first: pull the bottom drawer and look for ice at the back wall. Shut the water supply valve behind the refrigerator for a day; if the puddle stops, the valve or the supply side is the source.

How we fix it: we clear and thaw the drain, replace the valve, pan or tube, and check the filter seal. The Irvine leak we wrote up had this same symptom.

KitchenAid refrigerator warm while the freezer is cold

Likely causes: an evaporator fan that has stopped or is iced in, a defrost circuit fault (heater, thermistor or bimetal thermostat) that lets the evaporator frost over, or on built-ins a damper that no longer opens between the two compartments.

Try this first: listen for the fan with the freezer door open and the light switch held in; silence or scraping means the fan. Unplug for a day with the doors open; cooling that returns and fails again in a few weeks is defrost.

How we fix it: we test the fan, the heater and the thermistor, replace the one that failed and reset the control. These are common parts and are usually on the van.

KitchenAid dishwasher not cleaning

Likely causes: a wash pump that has worn and lost pressure, a diverter motor stuck sending water to one arm, spray arms clogged with scale, a filter full of debris, or an inlet valve that lets in too little water.

Try this first: clean the filter and the spray arm holes, run a citric-acid cleaner cycle, and run the kitchen tap hot before you start the dishwasher.

How we fix it: we check fill level and spray pressure, test the diverter and the pump, and replace the failed part. The circulation pump repair we wrote up is the classic version.

KitchenAid dishwasher not starting or stopping mid-cycle

Likely causes: a door latch the control no longer sees as closed, a control board or touch panel, a heater fault the control logs as a code, or a drain pump that cannot empty the tub so the cycle will not advance.

Try this first: press the door firmly until it clicks, check for a control lock or a delay start, and switch the breaker off for five minutes.

How we fix it: we read the stored fault codes, test the latch, the heater and the pump, and replace the part the test points to. Our Whirlpool and KitchenAid dishwasher code guide explains what the blinking lights mean.

KitchenAid wall oven not heating or door locked

Likely causes: a door lock whose switch still reports the door locked, or disagrees with the door switch, so the control logs a door fault (an F5 code on most models) and refuses to heat; a relay board that no longer powers the bake element; an open bake or broil element; a failed temperature sensor; or a control board after a surge.

Try this first: cancel any self-clean, switch the breaker off for five minutes and let the oven cool fully; a lock stuck after self-clean often releases.

How we fix it: we test the lock, the sensor, the elements and the relay outputs and replace what failed. The codes are in our Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid oven code guide.

KitchenAid gas cooktop clicking, not lighting or smelling of gas

Likely causes: a burner that clicks without lighting has a wet or misaligned cap, a cracked igniter or a failing spark module; a burner that will not light at all may have a blocked orifice or a stuck valve; a gas smell is a leak at a valve, a fitting or the manifold and needs attention right away.

Try this first: dry and reseat the burner caps. If you smell gas, turn the cooktop off, close the supply valve if you can reach it, open windows and call. Do not run the igniters.

How we fix it: we find a leak with a detector and soap solution, replace the valve or fitting and test it under pressure. The Villa Park cooktop leak we wrote up was a call like this. Spark modules and igniters are common parts and a quick repair once the part is in hand.

What KitchenAid repair costs

The $79 service call is the same for a KitchenAid as for any other brand: it buys the trip and the diagnosis and is applied to the repair you approve. The price for parts and labor is in writing before we start and does not move. Because KitchenAid uses Whirlpool parts, the repairs sit where Whirlpool repairs sit: a thermistor, a bimetal, a door latch, a spark igniter or a cleared drain at the affordable end; an evaporator fan, a defrost heater, a wash pump, a diverter motor, a door lock or an oven igniter in the middle; a relay board, a control board, a compressor or a sealed-system leak at the expensive end. Built-in refrigerators carry higher part prices than freestanding ones, and we tell you that before you decide.

RepairTypical price, parts and labor
Refrigerator defrost system, fan motor or ice maker$220 to $450
Refrigerator compressor or refrigerant leak (sealed system)$600 to $1,800
Washer drain pump, door lock or suspension$180 to $400
Washer motor, inverter board or bearings$350 to $800
Dryer heating element, igniter, fuse or rollers$150 to $350
Dishwasher drain pump, valve or latch$170 to $350
Dishwasher wash pump or control board$300 to $600
Oven igniter, element or sensor$160 to $350
Oven or range control board$300 to $700

Typical Orange County ranges for parts and labor on common models; the service call is $79 and is applied to any of them. Built-in, professional and commercial units, and parts that have to come from the manufacturer, can run higher. You get the exact written price after the diagnosis and before any work starts.

Repair or replace a KitchenAid appliance?

A built-in KitchenAid refrigerator is almost always worth repairing, sealed-system work included, because the unit is sized for the cabinet and replacing it means a cabinetry job on top of the purchase. A freestanding French-door model under ten years old with a fan, defrost or drain fault is an easy yes; the same unit past twelve years with a compressor failure is where we give you the number and let you choose. Dishwashers are worth repairing while the tub and racks are sound; a wash pump on a rusting tub is not. Wall ovens and dual-fuel ranges are worth repairing as long as the control board is still available, and for the Whirlpool platform it usually is.

KitchenAid error codes

KitchenAid dishwashers and ovens report faults the same way their Whirlpool and Maytag twins do: a dishwasher without a display blinks a light in a counted pattern, and an oven shows an F code followed by a number. Two guides decode them, with what to check before you call: Whirlpool and KitchenAid dishwasher error codes and Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid oven error codes.

How a KitchenAid service call works

  1. Book. Call (949) 544-5550 or book online. The model number is on a label inside the refrigerator, on the dishwasher door edge or on the underside of a cooktop, which may mean looking up from the cabinet below; it tells us which Whirlpool platform you have.
  2. Diagnose. We put the appliance into its diagnostic mode, read the stored codes and test the part they point to. That is the $79 service call.
  3. Written price. You get the parts-and-labor price in writing with the $79 credited, and you decide before anything is replaced.
  4. Repair. Common parts such as igniters, latches and fans are usually on the van. A board or a built-in refrigerator part comes from a local distributor, usually the next business day.
  5. Warranty. Parts and labor are under warranty, and a fault that comes back within 90 days is a return visit with no service-call fee.

KitchenAid appliance repair FAQ

How much does KitchenAid appliance repair cost?

The service call is $79 and is applied to the repair. Thermistors, latches, igniters and cleared drains are the affordable end; fans, defrost heaters, wash pumps, diverters and door locks are the middle; relay boards, control boards, compressors and sealed-system work are the expensive end. You approve the written price before we touch anything.

Do you repair built-in KitchenAid refrigerators?

Yes, including sealed-system work on them. Built-ins are worth repairing far longer than freestanding units because the replacement is sized to the cabinet and installed by a carpenter as well as a delivery crew.

Are KitchenAid parts the same as Whirlpool parts?

Very often, yes. KitchenAid is a Whirlpool Corporation brand and shares its platforms with Whirlpool and Maytag, so pumps, fans, latches, igniters and boards usually cross-reference. That keeps parts in stock and repairs quick.

Why is my KitchenAid dishwasher not cleaning?

Most often a worn wash pump, a stuck diverter motor or clogged spray arms. Clean the filter and the arms and run a citric-acid cleaner first; if the dishes still come out dirty, the pump or diverter needs testing.

My KitchenAid oven door is locked and it will not heat. What now?

Switch the breaker off for five minutes and let the oven cool completely; a lock stuck after self-clean often releases. If the door stays locked or the oven still will not heat, the lock assembly or the relay board has failed, and both are routine repairs.

Can you come today?

Usually. Same-day KitchenAid repairs are available across Orange County Monday to Saturday when the schedule has an opening, and the next day when it does not.

What warranty is on the repair?

Parts and labor are under warranty. If the same problem comes back within 90 days, the return visit has no service-call fee.
