d80, d90 and d95 mean the exhaust duct is 80, 90 or 95 percent blocked, tE1 to tE4 are temperature sensor faults, PS means an electric dryer is wired to the wrong power, nP means one leg of the power is missing, gAS means a gas dryer did not light, dE is the door, FO means the lint filter is out, LE1 is a drum not turning on inverter models and CL is only the child lock. Cut power at the breaker, clean the lint filter, pull the duct off the wall, run an Air Dry cycle and try again. A code that comes back needs a technician.

Written by a working technician at Cactus Appliance in Irvine, this guide covers the LG DLE electric dryers, the DLG gas dryers and the WashTower dryer we service across Orange County. Where a code applies only to electric or only to gas dryers, the cell says so.

Try this first

  1. Cut power for five minutes. Switch the breaker off and back on. On an electric dryer look closely at the double breaker: one half can trip on its own and leave the drum turning with no heat.
  2. Clean the lint filter and seat it fully. If water beads on the mesh, wash it with dish soap; softener film blocks air. Vacuum the slot the filter sits in.
  3. Test the duct. Pull the flex duct off the wall, run an Air Dry cycle and feel the airflow at the back of the dryer. Strong there and weak at the outside cap means the blockage is in the wall or roof run.
  4. Close the door firmly. Nothing should hang over the opening, and the latch should click.
  5. Gas dryers: check the supply valve. The handle should be in line with the pipe. That is the only gas check an owner should do.

How LG dryers show errors

LG dryers show a code on the time display and keep it there until you press Power. Two things on the panel look like errors and are not. The Flow Sense indicator lights bars after a cycle: no bars or one bar is normal on most models, more bars mean more restriction, and once the restriction is severe the display switches to d80, d90 or d95. The Check Filter light is a reminder at the start of each cycle. PS and nP belong to electric models, which run the heater on 240 volts across two legs of the supply; a gas dryer runs on an ordinary outlet and lights a burner. A gas dryer whose burner does not light shows gAS on newer models and no code at all on older ones.

Airflow and lint filter codes

CodeWhat it meansWhat to do
d75 / d80Flow Sense: the exhaust duct is about 75 or 80 percent restricted (d75 on some models).Clean the lint filter and run the duct test above. Strong airflow at the dryer puts the blockage in the wall or roof run; weak airflow means a lint-packed blower housing, a service visit. On a gas dryer, d80 with cold air can also mean no gas; check the supply valve first.
d90Flow Sense: about 90 percent restricted. Cycles run long and hot.Stop using heated cycles until the duct is cleared. Check the outside cap for a stuck flap or a nest, then clean the run or have it cleaned.
d95Flow Sense: about 95 percent restricted, the most severe reading.Do not run the dryer on heat; a duct this blocked is a fire risk. Clear the duct first and book a visit if the code stays.
Flow Sense barsNot an error: the duct restriction indicator that lights after a cycle. No bars or one bar is normal on most models. Two or more bars mean a real restriction; clean the run before the d codes appear.
Check FilterNot an error: a reminder that lights at the start of each cycle.Clean the lint filter and press Start; the light goes out on its own.
FO / F0Filter out: the lint filter is missing or not seated in its slot. Models with a text display show INSERT FILTER instead.Push the filter fully home. If FO stays with the filter in place, the switch that detects it has failed.

Power and heat codes

CodeWhat it meansWhat to do
PSPower supply error on electric dryers: the power cord is wired incorrectly at the terminal block, or the dryer is getting the wrong voltage.Do not keep trying. If the dryer was just installed or moved, the cord connection is the first suspect; a technician checks the terminal block and the outlet with a meter.
nPNo power error on electric dryers: one leg of the 240-volt supply is missing, so the drum may turn while the heater is dead.Switch the double breaker fully off and back on. If nP returns, the outlet, the cord or the terminal block has a dead leg; if the supply measures right, the heater circuit is usually open (thermal fuse, high-limit thermostat or element) and the board is the last suspect.
gAS (shows as 9A5)Gas dryers only: no flame was sensed, so the gas supply is off or the igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils have failed.Check that the valve handle is in line with the pipe. If gAS returns with the valve open, book a visit; do not touch the burner.
tE1 / tE2 / tE3 / tE4Thermistor error: a temperature sensor reads open, shorted or out of range; the number identifies the sensor. On many models tE2 appears in a cold garage or with an iced exhaust and clears once the dryer warms; tE4 is a temperature out of range and needs service.LG’s reset: with the power off, hold Start/Pause for five seconds, restore power and run a cycle. A repeat means the thermistor or its connector has failed; we test the heater and the thermostats on the same visit.

Door, motor and lock codes

CodeWhat it meansWhat to do
dEDoor error: the door is open, or the door switch does not see it as closed.Close the door firmly and press Start. If dE stays, the door switch or the latch strike has failed; both are quick repairs.
LE1 / LE2 / LE3Inverter-motor and heat pump LG dryers only: LE1 means the drum is not turning, LE2 the compressor and LE3 the circulation fan on heat pump models. A conventional vented LG dryer with a jammed drum shows no code.Reduce the load and retry. If LE1 repeats on an empty drum, the blower wheel, a roller, the belt or the motor is the cause; LE2 and LE3 need a technician.
CLNot an error: the child lock is on and the buttons are ignored.Press and hold the button marked Child Lock for about three seconds until CL clears.

Codes and their meaning vary by model and production year, and the same code can have more than one cause. The owner’s manual for your model number (on the label inside the door opening) is the definitive list for your dryer. Only an on-site test confirms which part has failed, and we run that test before anything is ordered.

What the common codes turn out to be on a service call

d80, d90 and d95: a blockage that is usually not inside the dryer

Likely causes: lint packed into a long duct run, a crushed foil flex behind the dryer, a cap with a flap stuck shut, a nest, or a blower wheel caked with lint, which usually comes with a new noise.

Try this first: the duct test above, then watch the outside cap while the dryer runs; the flap should lift and stay up.

How we fix it: we check airflow at the dryer and at the cap, clear the blower housing, replace crushed flex, and tell you when the run inside the wall needs a duct cleaner before the dryer is safe to use. A blocked vent that showed up as noise rather than a code is in Dryer Making Loud Noise? A Clogged Vent Was Why.

No heat: PS or nP on an electric dryer, gAS or no code on gas

Likely causes: electric: half of a double breaker tripped, a burned wire at the terminal block, a cord wired wrong after a move, an open heating element, or a thermal fuse that opened because the duct was clogged. Gas: a weak igniter, a flame sensor that opens early, or gas valve coils that drop out once warm.

Try this first: reset both halves of the breaker, confirm the gas valve is open, and clean the filter and duct; an open thermal fuse usually started as a clogged vent.

How we fix it: we read the voltage at the terminal block and across the element, test the fuse and the thermostats, and on a gas dryer watch a full ignition cycle. The LG gas case is in LG Dryer Not Heating: Igniter and Flame Sensor Fix.

tE1 to tE4: a sensor, or a duct that cooked it

Likely causes: a thermistor that drifted out of range, a loose connector behind the drum, or heat soak from a blocked duct.

Try this first: LG’s reset from the table above. Damp clothes with no code are a different thing: softener film on the two metal moisture bars inside the drum opening; wipe them with rubbing alcohol.

How we fix it: we measure the thermistor resistance against the air temperature, check the high-limit and cycling thermostats, and replace the sensor when the reading is out of range.

dE and LE1: the door, or a drum that will not turn

Likely causes: for dE, a worn door switch, a bent latch strike or a door that no longer closes square; for LE1, or a vented dryer that stops with no code, a blower wheel packed with lint, seized rollers, a seized idler pulley or a failing motor.

Try this first: close the door firmly for dE. For LE1, or a drum that stopped with no code, cut power and turn the drum by hand: it should move freely with a soft rumble; grinding or a drum that will not turn means a roller or the blower.

How we fix it: we replace the door switch, or open the cabinet, replace rollers, idler and belt as a set and clear the blower housing. Worn rollers caught in time are in Dryer Making Loud Noise in Irvine? Worn Rollers Fix; the same motor-and-blower failure on a Samsung is in Samsung Dryer Burning Smell: Motor and Blower Fix.

Stay safe. Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before you touch the back; an electric terminal block carries 240 volts. Never work on the gas valve, the burner or the gas line, and never bypass a thermal fuse or a high-limit thermostat; they open because the dryer was already too hot. Lint is fuel. If you smell scorching or see a brown mark on the back panel, leave the power off and call.

When a code means a part has failed

The service call is $79 and covers the trip and the diagnosis. We confirm the failed part by testing it: a d90 can be a crushed hose or a packed blower, and a no-heat complaint a breaker or an element. You get a written price for parts and labor before any work starts, and the $79 is applied to that price when you approve it. Common parts such as thermistors, thermal fuses and door switches are usually on the van; heating elements, motors and control boards come from local distributors, usually the next business day. The repair is under warranty on parts and labor, and if the same fault returns within 90 days the return visit has no service-call fee.

LG dryer error code FAQ

How do I reset an LG dryer?

Press Power, switch the breaker off for five minutes and back on, then start a cycle. On an electric dryer check both halves of the double breaker. If the same code returns, the fault is real.

What does d80 mean on an LG dryer?

d80 is the Flow Sense warning that the exhaust duct is about 80 percent restricted; d90 and d95 are the same warning at a worse level. Clean the lint filter and the duct run; if the code stays with a clear duct, the blower housing is packed with lint.

What does PS mean on an LG dryer?

PS is a power supply error on electric dryers: the power cord is wired incorrectly at the terminal block or the dryer is on the wrong voltage. It shows up most often after an installation or a move and needs a technician with a meter.

Why does my LG dryer run but not heat with no code?

On an electric dryer, half of the double breaker, a thermal fuse or the heating element is the usual cause. On a gas dryer it is the igniter, the flame sensor or the gas valve coils; newer LG gas dryers show gAS when the burner does not light, older ones tumble cold with no code.

Can I keep using the dryer with a code on it?

With dE, FO or CL, yes, once the cause is fixed. With d80 you can finish a load; with d90 or d95 stop using heat until the duct is cleared. With PS, nP, gAS or any tE code, leave it off until it has been tested.

How much does it cost to fix an LG dryer error code?

The service call is $79, applied to the repair. A door switch, a thermal fuse or a thermistor is the affordable end; an igniter, a flame sensor or a roller kit is the middle; a heating element, a motor or a control board is the expensive end. You approve a written price before any work starts.
