Common Kenmore problems and how we fix them

Kenmore refrigerator not cooling, or cooling less every week

Likely causes: a failed compressor or inverter board on the LG-built 795 models, a start relay or overload on the Whirlpool and Frigidaire platforms, a condenser fan that stopped, or a refrigerant leak that lets the temperature creep up over days while the compressor runs nonstop.

Try this first: vacuum the condenser behind the lower grille or the back panel and listen for the compressor. On a Whirlpool- or Frigidaire-built model, a click every few minutes with no hum points to the start relay or the compressor; an LG-built 795 has no relay, and a compressor that never starts or runs only a few seconds points to the compressor or the inverter board.

How we fix it: we test the compressor windings, the relay and the inverter, and check the system pressures. When the compressor is gone we replace it and recharge the system in your kitchen, as on the Kenmore refrigerator compressor failure in Irvine.

Kenmore refrigerator not making ice

Likely causes: a water filter past its date, a frozen fill tube, a failed inlet valve, a dead ice maker module, or a freezer that is not cold enough. The last one matters: a slow refrigerant leak shows up as no ice before it shows up as warm food.

Try this first: confirm the ice maker is switched on, replace a filter older than six months, and put a thermometer in the freezer overnight. A reading above 10°F means the freezer is the first problem to fix; the ice maker cannot cycle in a freezer that warm, whether or not it has a fault of its own.

How we fix it: we test the valve, the module and the freezer temperature, then look at the sealed system when the freezer is the weak point. The Kenmore in Santa Ana that stopped making ice had a refrigerant leak, and a new ice maker would not have helped.

Kenmore washer not draining, or stopping full of water

Likely causes: a drain pump with a cracked impeller or a dead motor, a sock or a coin in the pump housing, a kinked drain hose, or on a front-loader a clogged drain filter.

Try this first: check that the drain hose is not kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe. On an LG-built front-loader (796), clean the drain filter behind the small door at the bottom, with a towel ready; on most Whirlpool-built 110 front-loaders the filter is behind the lower kick panel, which comes off with screws, and that is a job for the visit.

Kenmore dryer running but not heating

Likely causes: on an electric dryer, an open thermal cut-off on the heater box (on the Whirlpool-built 110 electric models the blower thermal fuse stops the drum instead), a failed heating element or a high-limit thermostat; on a gas dryer, weak gas valve coils that open at the start and quit a few minutes in, a cracked igniter or a flame sensor. Behind many of these is a clogged vent.

Try this first: clean the lint screen and check that the duct behind the dryer is not crushed or packed with lint. If the dryer heats for a while and then goes cold, or clothes take two cycles, a restricted vent is the usual cause and is what eventually blows the thermal cut-off. If there is no heat at all, the vent is not the answer; leave that to the diagnosis.

How we fix it: we test the element, the fuse, the thermostats and the coils, replace what failed, and tell you if the vent run needs cleaning so the new part lasts.

Kenmore dishwasher not draining or not cleaning

Likely causes: on the Whirlpool-built 665 dishwashers, a drain pump or check valve blocked with glass and seeds, a chopper or filter packed with debris, a wash motor that lost power, or a control board that no longer runs the pump. A knockout plug left in a new disposal is common on a dishwasher that worked last week.

Try this first: clean the filter at the bottom of the tub, check the drain hose for a high loop and make sure the air gap on the counter is clear.

How we fix it: we test the drain pump and the wash motor under power, clear the sump and replace the pump, the chopper assembly or the board when one has failed.

Kenmore oven not heating or not holding temperature

Likely causes: on a gas range, a bake igniter that glows but never gets hot enough to open the safety valve; on an electric range, a broken bake element or a relay on the control board that stopped closing. A drifting oven sensor makes either run too hot or too cold.

Try this first: watch the igniter when you set bake (on most ranges you have to lift the oven floor panel to see it); a glow for more than about 90 seconds to two minutes with no flame means a weak igniter. On an electric oven, look for a blister or a break in the element.

How we fix it: we measure igniter current, element resistance and the sensor reading, and replace the failed part. Common parts such as bake igniters and bake elements are usually on the van; anything else comes from a local distributor, usually the next business day.

Repair or replace a Kenmore appliance?

Most Kenmore appliances are worth repairing.
